Is a Mini Goldendoodle Really Right for You? What to Consider First

What are F1 Mini Goldendoodles?

F1 Goldendoodle means breeding a mix of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. In Farmhouse Pups’ case, our Golden Retriever is bred with a Miniature Poodle.

These “first-generation” Goldendoodles are where it all started.

They are the original crossbreeds that paved the way for this popular designer dog breed. This mix of the gentle and friendly Golden Retriever with the intelligence and low-shedding qualities of the Poodle resulted in the creation of a lovable and highly adaptable canine companion.

What about the other types of Goldendoodle?

Like the F1B Goldendoodles, for instance, these pups are a cross between an F1 Goldendoodle and a purebred Poodle. This generation is often a favorite for families looking for more allergy-friendly dogs, thanks to their higher percentage of Poodle genetics. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • F1B Goldendoodles = F1 Goldendoodle × Poodle
  • Poodle percentage is typically around 75%, which often means less shedding and better suitability for allergy sufferers.
  • Important note: No dog is truly 100% hypoallergenic, but F1Bs are usually a great choice for those with mild allergies.

As you move further down the generational line — with terms like F2, F2B, and F3 — you’ll still find that same lovable Goldendoodle personality, but with a few more differences:

  • Coat types can vary more (from wavy to curly to somewhere in between)
  • Size might be less predictable depending on the parents.
  • Temperament can have a wider range as the genetics get a little more mixed

F1 Goldendoodles represent the origin of this awesome breed, blending the best of the Golden Retriever and the Poodle.

However, it’s essential to understand the distinctions between the generations when choosing the right Goldendoodle for your lifestyle and preferences. 😊

Goldendoodle hair – What to expect

One of the most asked questions is “What will their hair look like?” This is what makes Goldendoodles so popular, their adorable, often allergy-friendly coats — but not all Goldendoodle hair is the same!

Depending on their generation (F1, F2, etc) and genetics from both the golden retriever and the poodle, you’ll see a lot of variation in Goldendoodle coat types.

Here’s a simple breakdown:

  • F1 Goldendoodles (Golden Retriever × Poodle) usually have a wavy coat — often called Goldendoodle wavy hair — and can shed a little more compared to later generations. They aren’t the best choice for severe allergy sufferers, but are often fine for families with mild sensitivities.
→ Personally, I love the wavy look!
  • F1B Goldendoodles (F1 Goldendoodle × Poodle) tend to have curlier Goldendoodle hair styles with a higher percentage of Poodle genetics. They usually shed very little and are considered more hypoallergenic than F1s.
  • F2, F2B, and Multigenerational Goldendoodles can vary a lot!
Some have Goldendoodle straight hair (closer to a Retriever look), while others have tight curls like a Poodle. Shedding can range from light to almost none depending on the individual dog.

A good rule of thumb when it comes to Goldendoodle coat types:

  • Curlier coats = less shedding and more allergy-friendly
  • Straighter or looser waves = more shedding and less predictable for allergies

No matter what kind of Goldendoodle hair style your pup has, regular grooming is key!

Brushing a few times a week helps manage loose hair, keeps their coats healthy, and cuts down on shedding around the house.

mini goldendoodle full grown

One of the most common questions I get asked is, “How big do F1 Mini Goldendoodles get?” It’s something many people wonder about when looking for a puppy — and the answer really comes down to the genetics of the Golden Retriever and the Miniature Poodle.

One puppy might take after the Golden Retriever and grow a little bigger, while a sibling could take after the Poodle side and stay smaller.

F1 Mini Goldendoodle size can vary quite a bit, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. In fact, at Farmhouse Pups, we often see puppies from the same litter end up very different sizes — even by the time they’re just 8 weeks old!

Factors that Influence Size

If you’re wondering what affects how big your Miniature Goldendoodle will get, let’s take a quick look at the key factors that influence their full-grown size.

First, it helps to know that the term Miniature Goldendoodle refers to a smaller version of the standard Goldendoodle. This size comes from crossing a Miniature Poodle (typically the dad) with a Golden Retriever (usually the mom).

Here at Farmhouse Pups, our Golden Retriever stands about 20″ tall at the shoulders — just to give you a reference point.

Most Miniature F1 Goldendoodles fall within a general size range, and we’ve included a Miniature Goldendoodle size chart to help you get a clearer idea of what to expect. But even with that guide, there’s still a lot of natural variation. Puppies can take after either parent — or be a mix of both — so sizes can vary even within the same litter.

F1 Miniature Goldendoodles Size Chart

As your Goldendoodle matures, you can expect it to reach its full-grown size gradually over the first year. Most Mini Goldendoodles end up standing between 13 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing 15 to 35 pounds. However, some may be smaller or larger depending on whether they take after the Poodle or Golden Retriever side more.

Is an Miniature Goldendoodle a Good Fit for You?

Bringing home a Miniature Goldendoodle puppy is an experience filled with excitement, love, and plenty of tail wags. Known for their charming personalities, intelligence, and adaptability, these fluffy little companions quickly become part of the family.

Social and Playful Nature

Miniature Goldendoodles are naturally social and love being around people. They thrive on attention and interaction, making them great companions for families, singles, and seniors alike.

Trainability

These pups are not just cute — they’re smart, too! Thanks to their eagerness to please and natural intelligence, they’re usually easy to train. This makes them a great choice for first-time dog owners. Early socialization and positive reinforcement go a long way in shaping a well-mannered adult.

Low to Moderate Shedding

Mini Goldendoodles tend to shed less than a typical Golden Retriever, but more than a Poodle — so they fall in the low to moderate shedding range. While many allergy sufferers do well with them, it’s important to know that no generation is completely hypoallergenic. If allergies are a concern, it’s always a good idea to spend time with the puppy first before committing.

Lifespan

With good care, Miniature Goldendoodles enjoy a relatively long life — often between 10 to 15 years or more. That means you’re gaining a long-term companion who will bring love and joy to your life for years to come.

Energy Levels

Miniature Goldendoodles have a nice, balanced energy level. They love to play, go for walks, and stay active — but they’re just as happy curling up on the couch for a nap. This makes them a great fit for both busy families and more relaxed households!

Bonding

Miniature Goldendoodles are known for forming strong emotional bonds with their humans. They’re affectionate, loyal, and often make excellent emotional support animals. If you’re looking for a dog who truly becomes part of the family, a Miniature Goldendoodle is hard to beat.
